The Organization for Transformative Works (OTW) is a nonprofit organization run by and for fans to provide access to and preserve the history of fanworks and fan cultures.

We do this primarily through five projects:

Archive of Our Own

The Archive of Our Own offers a noncommercial and nonprofit central hosting place for fanfiction and other transformative fanworks, using open-source archiving software.

Fanlore

Fanlore, a fandom wiki, is devoted to preserving the history of transformative fanworks and the fandoms from which they have arisen.

Legal Advocacy

OTW is committed to protecting and defending fanworks from commercial exploitation and legal challenge.

Open Doors

Open Doors offers shelter to at-risk fannish projects. Subprojects include the Fan Culture Preservation Project, which preserves fanzines and other non-digital forms of fan culture, and the GeoCities Rescue Project.

Transformative Works and Cultures

TWC is a peer-reviewed academic journal that seeks to promote scholarship on fanworks and practices. We also publish a sister blog, the Symposium Blog, for the discussion of fannish meta topics and fannish perspectives on fan and media studies.

Information about the OTW can be found on its website at: http://transformativeworks.org

Our Fanlore project also has a community on Dreamwidth at: [community profile] fanlore

Comment Moderation Policy

The OTW encourages comments and discussion at its news outlets. In a few circumstances we may step in to moderate or delete content.
1) Spam: Unsolicited advertising for commercial entities will be deleted.
2) Hate Speech: The OTW does not police comments for language other than hate speech. Should a message threaten individuals or groups with violence or language that's intended as deliberately
insulting in a sexist, racist, or xenophobic manner, the message should be removed.
3) Taunting/off-topic: If someone is repeating the same comments, complaints, etc. on post after post, this content may be removed since activity of this type may affect other readers' willingness to leave comments or join in to a conversation.

Content Policy

We will remain a safe for work blog. This includes not posting photos that contain nudity or sexual situations or linking to such photos without a NSFW warning. Excess profanity should be avoided in posts and no profanity should be used when responding to comments. We may post selected content from other LiveJournal users as part of an article here. We will make an effort to determine whether the creator would object to the content being shared or linked to. If there is a lack of stated preference by the creator, the content may be shared under a good faith belief that the creator does not object to the content being shared. All material, regardless of content or source, must be properly credited. If the original creator so requests, we will remove references to their works in our material.
